How to Keep Your Dog Cool in the Hot Weather? Top Tips from Our Interview with Barking at the Moon on BBC Radio London

We were lucky enough to be featured on BBC Radio London’s Barking at the Moon to talk about how to keep your dog cool in the heat. Here were the top tips discussed.

1. Adjust Your Dog's Daily Routine

Alter your dog’s daily walk routine to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Aim for early morning or late evening walks when the sun's intensity is lower. Not only is the air cooler, but the pavement is also less likely to burn your pup’s paws. Avoid midday outings, and always check the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.

2. Keep Your Living Space Cool

Maintain a cool environment indoors by drawing curtains and lowering blinds to block out the sun. This will help keep the indoor temperature down and provide a much-needed retreat from the heat. If you have an air conditioner, use it to maintain a comfortable temperature. Fans are great at circulating air, creating a pleasant breeze, and can help keep things cool.

3. Hydration is Key

Always ensure that fresh, cool water is available for your dog. Consider placing multiple bowls of water around your home and, if you are going out, carry a portable water dish for your dog. Staying hydrated is vital for your dog’s health during hot weather.

5. Seek Shade and Avoid Hot Surfaces

When outdoors, always look for shaded areas where your dog can walk or rest. Remember that surfaces like asphalt can get extremely hot and might burn your dog's paws. If shade is scarce and you can’t avoid hot pavement, consider protective booties for your dog's paws.

6. Indoor Retreats

If it’s cooler inside your home, encourage your dog to stay indoors during peak heat hours. Indoor activities and play can keep them entertained without the risk of overheating.

7. Water Play

Engage your dog with water activities in your garden. Set up paddling pools, sprinklers, or misters that they can play in. Not only will this keep them cool, but it’s also a great way for them to have fun and stay active without overheating.

8. Frozen Delights

Treat your dog to a homemade frozen treat. For example, our special Doggy Ice Cream is a hit! It’s a fun and tasty way to help them cool down. You can easily whip this up with pet-safe ingredients—your pup will love it!

By following these tips, you can ensure that your dog enjoys the summer safely and stays as cool as possible. Always watch for signs of heatstroke, which can include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, uncoordinated movements, or collapse. If you notice any of these signs, immediately move your dog to a cooler area and consult your vet.

Stay cool and have a fantastic summer with your furry friend!
